Shopify SEO

Shopify SEO that works with the platform's limits, not against them

Shopify SEO means optimizing a Shopify store so its collections and products rank in Google and appear in AI shopping answers. Shopify handles hosting and the basics well, but its URL structure can create duplicate pages, and installed apps can slow the theme. We fix those platform-specific issues, then build collection pages and product content that earn rankings and sales.

Shopify SEO fixes the problems Shopify creates for search: products reachable through several URLs, tag and filter pages that copy each other and apps that slow the theme. Most of the fix lives in the theme and in collection content. We rarely recommend another SEO app, because the gains come from changes an app cannot make.

Why it matters

Many Shopify stores look identical to search engines

Illustration explaining why this SEO service matters

Lots of stores use the same themes and sell overlapping products, often with the supplier's descriptions. To a search engine, those stores can look interchangeable. The ones that rank tend to have collection pages that help shoppers choose, original product content and clean technical signals.

Internal links can work against you. Many themes link products through collection paths such as /collections/name/products/item. Shopify sets a canonical tag pointing to the main product URL, but internal links still spread crawl attention across duplicates. Changing how the theme links products often solves much of this.

Speed is the other common drag. Each app can add scripts to every page, and removing an app does not always remove its code. Leftover snippets from apps no longer in use are common in audits.

Our view: installing an SEO app rarely moves rankings on Shopify. The gains usually come from theme fixes, collection content and pruning apps.

robots.txt.liquid and index control

Our process

How we work on Shopify stores

Step 1

Audit with collaborator access

You invite us as a collaborator, so no passwords are shared. We review theme code, apps, crawl data and Search Console.

Step 2

Fix on a duplicate theme

Code changes are made on a copy of your live theme and previewed with you before publishing.

Step 3

Collections, then products

We work through collections by revenue potential, then improve the products inside the collections that start to grow.

Step 4

Report in Shopify terms

Monthly reports connect organic sessions to orders and revenue in Shopify analytics, broken down by collection.

From the field

Shopify SEO issues that appear constantly

Illustration of common SEO audit findings

Most Shopify audits turn up several of these:

  • Collection pages with a title and a product grid and nothing else.
  • Tag pages indexed with no unique content.
  • Product titles copied from the supplier and shared with many other stores.
  • Blank image alt text across the catalog.
  • Five review, upsell and popup apps loading scripts on every page.

Each of these can be fixed without leaving Shopify or rebuilding the theme.

FAQ

Shopify SEO questions

Is Shopify good for SEO?

For most stores, yes. Shopify provides reliable hosting, SSL, sitemaps, editable titles and descriptions and an editable robots.txt. Its main limits are a fixed URL structure and some duplicate URL behavior, which theme and settings changes can manage.

Can I change the /products/ and /collections/ URL structure?

No. Shopify requires those prefixes. They do not stop a store from ranking. What matters is a descriptive handle for each product and collection, and one URL that you link to consistently.

Do I need a Shopify SEO app?

Rarely. Apps can help with bulk edits or structured data, but they cannot write useful collection content or correct theme code. Some add scripts that slow the store, so we recommend an app only when it saves real time.

How do I fix duplicate content on Shopify?

Update the theme so product links point to /products/ URLs, keep tag and filtered pages out of the index using robots.txt.liquid or noindex tags, and write unique descriptions for important products instead of using supplier copy.

How long does Shopify SEO take?

Technical fixes often appear in Search Console within a month or two. Rankings for collections in competitive categories usually take several months of content and link work.

Can my products appear in ChatGPT shopping results?

We can improve the odds. AI shopping answers draw on product feeds, structured data, reviews and editorial mentions. We make sure your product data is complete and consistent, and we help you earn reviews and mentions on sites those tools tend to trust.

Client reviews

What our clients say

“Previously we had worked with some SEO companies who charged thousands of dollars but didn't deliver much. With Affordable SEO Plans the experience was entirely different since their prices were reasonable, the communication was excellent, and we began to see improvements in our Google rankings after a few months. I would strongly recommend them to any small business seeking affordable SEO services.”

“I was doubtful regarding affordable SEO since I thought that cheaper prices meant lower quality. I'm pleased that I decided to give them a try! Our website has now begun to rank for a greater number of relevant keywords, our organic traffic has increased, and we are receiving enquiries from customers who found us through Google. It has been a good investment for our business.”

“The thing I like best about Affordable SEO Plans is that they keep it simple: there's no confusing sales talk, no unnecessary services, just clear SEO work at a price which is reasonable. They have been responsive, transparent, and actually have been of genuine help in improving our online visibility. I wish that we had come across them earlier!”
